The tremendous deals afforded only those people who get to Walmart at 6 AM on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, inevitably lead to pushing, shoving, trampling, fighting, and then arresting. Sometimes, they lead to stealing, and this year, they’ve also led to picketing, as consumers protest stores being open on Thanksgiving, requiring employees to work on a day when they should be at home with their families. To help kick off the holiday shopping season, here’s a roundup of some Black Friday crimes from the long weekend....

The former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife have been indicted on corruption charges shortly after the Republican left office earlier this month. The 14-count indictment (attached below) details the vast array of favors political donor Jonnie Williams lavished upon the McDonnell family, including: In July, McDonnell apologized and said he had returned more than $120,000 in loans and other gifts from Johnnie Williams, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Star Scientific....

Veterans charged with certain criminal offenses in Madison County, Illinois can look forward to soon having a court staffed with veterans to handle their cases. The AP reported that the suburban St. Louis county is hoping to launch the new court, which will be run entirely by volunteers, by the end of next month or early March. Veterans interested in having their cases handled by the new court will be doing so entirely by their own choice, and it’s not yet clear how many vets will be taking part....

Officials could face criminal and civil charges for failure to warn Flint, Michigan residents of lead poisoning in the drinking water, state special counsel, Todd Flood, told reporters last week. Appointed by the State Attorney-General to investigate the case, Flood suggested that some people could face involuntary manslaughter charges if linked to recent deaths, as suspected. Flood gave no time frame for the investigation, according to The Detroit News. “We’re here to investigate what possible crimes there are, anything to the involuntary manslaughter or death that may have happened to some young person or old person because of this poisoning, to misconduct in office....

The Westboro Baptist Church has been a thorn in the side of nearly everyone who has come into contact with it for a number of years. But taunting people and lacking taste aren’t illegal, as the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1. The case, which presented the competing constitutional questions of free speech and privacy, ultimately sided in favor of free speech. Chief Justice Roberts said that the Constitution was designed “to protect even hurtful speech on public issues,” CNN reports....

Frosted glass keeps falling on my head … that’s what owners of Ikea’s Calypso frosted ceiling lamps must be humming. The company has issued a recall after nineteen complaints were filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lamp’s frosted glass shade spontaneously slips from its metal base and falls on unsuspecting people. At least three suffered bumps and lacerations. Ikea Dresser Responsible for Eight Toddler Deaths Ikea is still reeling from two recent product recalls, one that killed eight toddlers, and another, two pets....

A new study suggests that women who undergo fertility treatments are at a higher risk of developing certain kinds of ovarian cancer. The IVF cancer risk was discovered by Dutch researchers who presented the results in the journal Human Reproduction recently. The 15-year study monitored 25,000 sub-fertile women who attended IVF clinics in the 80s and 90s. Some of the women received egg-stimulating drugs, while others did not. The comparison between two groups of sub-fertile women is important because sub-fertile women already have an increased risk of ovarian cancer, according to Reuters....

It’s her material world, we are just living in it. Or is it? Lady Madonna has been sued for trademark infringement over the use of the name “Material Girl” in her clothing line designed with daughter Lourdes. The line went on sale at Macy’s the first week in August and the suit dropped soon after. Plaintiff LA Triumph is suing the Material Mom for infringement, claiming they have been using the name for their own clothing line since at least 1997....

Huisken Meat Company, maker of Sam’s Choice burgers, has recalled more than 89,500 pounds of its Black Angus Vidalia Onion products, claiming they could be contaminated with wood materials. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall after boxes of the tainted burgers were shipped to retailers nationwide last month. Now is not the time to wonder how “extraneous wood materials” made their way into your burger....

As we all know, laws are incredibly dynamic. Just a few months ago, we went over the possibility of forced blood draws of DUI suspects and how it’s probably a bad idea to refuse a test. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that police usually have to get a search warrant before they can order blood tests for drunken-driving suspects. The vote was 8-to-1, with Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting by his lonesome....

The legal relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico has always been a little complicated. And perhaps nowhere has that status been more on display than the issue of same-sex marriage. On Tuesday, the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico ruled that the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that found same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry does not apply to the island commonwealth....

NBC is going to have some explaining to do after it was slapped with a proposed class action lawsuit by former unpaid interns, claiming the broadcast company violated federal labor laws. The suit includes former interns from NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” as well as the booking department for MSNBC, and seeks more than $5 million in damages, reports The Hollywood Reporter. NBC joins Fox Searchlight Pictures in the growing list of media companies being sued in federal court for allegedly stiffing their interns, with plaintiffs claiming these companies violated the Fair Labor Standards Act....

A Florida woman will not be winning an employee of the month award anytime soon. Rather, Wendy’s employee Rictoria Bethea is facing more than just employment termination after her latest and last shift with the fast food chain ended with an attack on a “disrespectful” drive-thru customer. The Wendy’s drive thru attack started after Bethea, 21, told customer Chloe Glover to speak up when placing her drive-thru order. After several failed attempts Bethea told it to her straight: “There’s no need to disrespect me, because I will go out there and kick your ass....

It doesn’t quite have the same ring as Jaime Lannister’s ‘Kingslayer,’ but William Merideth’s moniker is just as well-earned. Last July, the self-described ‘Drone Slayer’ took his Benelli M1 Super 90 shotgun to a neighbor’s drone and did indeed slay it. And now that neighbor is suing Merideth in federal court. So who controls the airspace above your property? And can you shoot down your neighbor’s drone? We might find out soon....

The juveniles who were involved in the “Kids for Cash” scandal got an unexpected surprise. Timesleader reports that Senior Berks County Judge Arthur Grim announced that juveniles that still owe restitution will have their cases dismissed and that they will not have to pay the remainder of any restitution they were previously ordered to pay. This announcement comes at the heels of an announcement by Luzerne County District Attorney Jackie Musto Carroll who said that she would not retry any of the cases under review after the “Kids for Cash” scandal....

More than 100 teens were rescued in a nationwide sex trafficking sting, the FBI announced over the weekend. Some 150 alleged pimps were arrested and will face criminal charges including human trafficking. The three-day “Operation Cross-Country” took place in 70 U.S. cities. It was the FBI’s largest action to date focusing on the recovery of children between 13 and 17 involved in sex trafficking and exploitation, according to NBC News....

A third biker has been charged in the SUV assault caught on tape, for his alleged smashing of driver Alexian Lien’s window with a motorcycle helmet. Reginald Chance, 37, has been charged with “assault, gang assault, weapons possession, criminal mischief, and unlawful imprisonment” for allegedly setting in motion events that led to Lien’s beating, according to The New York Times. What do these charges mean for Chance? Chance has been charged with both assault and gang assault for acts caught on video of a man smashing in Lien’s driver-side window with a motorcycle helmet....

The Department of the Treasury announced a new strategy in crime fighting: figure out who’s behind companies used to pay “all cash” for high-end residential real estate. The Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) said it will now require title insurance companies to identify buyers of luxury real estate in Manhattan, New York and Miami-Dade County, Florida. Those of us who can’t afford a mansion or high-rise condo can at least rest easy that we’re not being added to a government watch list....

It’s been nearly twenty-four hours since the bombings at the Boston Marathon and we know very little about just what happened. News reports are calling the explosives crude bombs, packed with nails and shrapnel, and left in trash cans. The death toll stands at three, including 8-year-old Martin Richard, whose mother is recovering from brain surgery and whose sister lost a leg in the blast, reports NBC. We’re saddened by yesterday’s act of terror....
