A 26-year-old Alabama man has been sentenced to a year in prison for Twitter threats against President Barack Obama. Jarvis M. Britton sent out a tweet September 14 that said, “Let’s kill the president. F.E.A.R.” – an acronym that stood for “F— Everyone And Run,” according to AL.com. A Secret Service agent’s affidavit also reports several other tweets made in June, one of which stated, “Free speech? Really? Let’s test this!...

A University of California, Irvine professor is being held without bail after police say he plotted an attack on his son’s high school, following his son’s suicide. Rainer Reinscheid blamed the Irvine high school for his son’s death saying that the school mistreated the child. As a result, Reinscheid allegedly plotted to buy guns, murder students and administrators, carry out sexual assaults, burn down the school, and kill himself, reports The Associated Press....

Law enforcement officers may be scanning your license plate the next time you hit the road. While critics are raising privacy concerns, the practice is perfectly legal. Mississippi’s only abortion clinic can stay open, after a federal appeals court found that Mississippi’s newest abortion law was unconstitutional. The Mississippi law was similar to controversial abortion reform that passed in Texas last year; the Texas law was upheld by the same federal appellate court in March. Reuters reports that in a 2-1 decision, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals determined the Mississippi law would “place an undue burden on a woman’s right to seek an abortion....

Those pesky pop-ups warning your computer may have a virus are actually “scareware” aimed at making people buy anti-virus products whether they need them or not, a Symantec lawsuit claims. A computer user in Washington state is suing Symantec Corp., the maker of Norton Utilities and PC Tools, for fraud, Reuters reports. The suit seeks class-action status. Symantec, based in Mountain View, Calif., distributes free trial versions of its anti-virus software that supposedly scans computers for risks....

Ticketmaster has proposed a $400 million settlement with 50 million customers over misleading fees. Plaintiffs in the class action suit against Ticketmaster, now owned by Live Nation, complained as early as 2003 that the “order processing fees” and “delivery fees” were not spent on those services, but actually just being pocketed by the company. The Hollywood Reporter claims the settlement would cover customers who paid these fees from October 1999 through February 2013....
