Not quite sure how many readers are going to be surprised by the headline “Heidi montag calls off divorce from husband Spencer Pratt,” but here’s to hoping. The 24 year-old Montag and her 27 year-old husband have decided to give love another chance.

ABC News quotes the reality star on her decision to dismiss her divorce: “We do love each other and we realized we do want to spend the rest of our lives together. We are back together and we are trying to make things work.” The couple’s reconciliation will most likely be followed by tabloids every step of the way. There are, however, legal lessons to be learned from this reality television couple.

Dismissing a divorce is a mutual decision. Even if the individual that originally filed for divorce decides to dismiss the action, if the other party to the marriage wants to continue with the divorce, then he or she will ultimately be granted the divorce. Also, should Speidi (or any other couple for that matter) later decide that they do wish to divorce, then he or she would have to start the process all over again. Because a dismissal is seen as an end, a couple cannot just resume with the divorce they had originally filed with the court. Perhaps this will be our next Speidi lesson…
